A growing coalition of concerned neighbors and park-goers oppose the construction of eight pickleball courts at Osage Park. Our key concerns include noise impacts on surrounding homes and safety risks related to traffic (scroll down for more details).

Update: On May 21, 2024, Danville Town Council granted our appeal and there will be no expansion of pickleball courts at Osage! Town Staff have also been asked by the Council to propose sound mitigations to the existing two courts. Click here to see KTVU media coverage

Three reasons why there are more suitable locations than Osage Park:

1. Noise from the two current Osage pickleball courts disturbs many nearby homes. Quadrupling the number of courts from two to eight would present an unreasonable burden to these neighbors, and impact hundreds of residents who frequent Osage Park. As widely published in studies and news headlines, including the LA Times and Wall Street Journal, pickleball is not well suited for residential areas and will disrupt the balance and tranquility of Osage. A pickleball hub in a residential area clearly violates the Town of Danville’s General Noise Regulations which prohibit “loud, unnecessary or unusual noise that disrupts the peace or quiet of a neighborhood”.

2. Traffic & Child Safety: Speeding, near misses, ignored stop signs, congestion…all of these are happening with increased frequency in the school zones near Charlotte Wood Middle and John Baldwin Elementary Schools. A pickleball hub at Osage would cause a large influx of new car volume in a very traffic-sensitive area with a significant population of students ages 5-12 walking and riding their bikes. More cars = more risk.  See map noting key intersections where 525 pedestrians cross daily.

3. Better amenities for pickleball: There are better options for the pickleball community, which include a more central location, distance from schools and homes, sizable streets, ample parking, and longer operating hours with night lighting. The Town of Danville prematurely eliminated sites like the west side of Sycamore Park which has all the qualities of an ideal location, including high ambient noise from Camino Tassajara.
